lyrics

I can still remember
tender moments in time
rewinding memories sublime
through the windows of my mind
divine winds align
careen, peacefully wind
take me back when I was young
to the slum in which I'm from
I trudge this crooked path
looking back on what it was
deep within the vacant lots
where the powerlines hum
barbed wire, broken glass
a graffitied underpass: nothing's promised
today can offer nothing that lasts
I'm entranced by how it pass
that river flowing fluid
the weight of my experience
embedded in this music
healing therapeutic
yet rooted in how we use it
reusing all my patterned behaviors
became abusive
caught between domestic disputes
and student truants
alcohol influenced and slid me
into oblivion
oblivious that ignorance
could never be bliss
there's no time for looking back
only time to admit

And, of recently I've lost
some of those of whom I sought
to walk and make amends
for wrongs I won't defend
reflective I build a bridge
to nowhere I could relive
falling in and out of consciousness
at funerals for them
blend coffins and condolences
coordinating memorials
flowers and pictorials
taking in the scenarios
scenes involving burials
have us bear the unbearable
pain, uncomparable strain
we push to carry on
a silent prayer on a dead wind gone
returns and resonates, soft
off eternity's walls
a god deaf and blind
pauses deeply inside
perplexed at every human heart
unprepared for new life
all at the same time
an infant opens its eyes
undefined by the depression
where others would turn to suicide
if I die tonight
with these words on my lips
know there's no time for looking back
only time to admit

They say when one door closes
another one opens
I dedicate this song
to rapper, mentor, and good friend -- Ralph Prater
May you rest in peace
Keep it moving
